Administration of Medication
Ducklings place the child's well-being at the very core of the ethos of the setting. Two members of staff are currently first aid trained who will administer prescription only medicine when necessary, however in most circumstances as your child only attends for a two and a half hour session we would expect most medicines such as anti-biotics to be administered at home. One member of our staff is also currently trained in Anaplyaxis and Auto Injector (Epi-Pen) If your child needs prescription medicines, such as inhalers or epi-pen, then a staff member will receive appropriate training in order to do this. In all circumstances a permission form for administering must be completed. All medicines must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and dose. If medicine has been administered it must be recorded by the appropriate member of staff and signed for by the parent at the end of the session. It is our aim to safeguard and maintain the well-being of all children within Ducklings and the staff who look after them. Duckling’s works in partnership with parents and information sharing in this area is vital so that staff respect and are aware of cultural, ethical or religious reasons which may relate directly to the administration of medicine. Medicines must be stored correctly as directed on the item. We do not have refridgeration facilities so cannot accept medicines that are required to be kept below room temperature. Medicines such as inhalers or epi-pens will be kept on top of the tall cupboard in the children’s room, for easy access and out of children’s reach for safety. If you have non-prescription medicines such as calpol or teething gel in childrens changing bags, please ensure you notify a member of staff if this is the case then we can store the bag or medicine safely out of reach of children. Emergency Procedures In an emergency situation, an ambulance will be called for and parents informed immediately. A member of staff preferably the child’s key worker will go with the child in the ambulance and stay with the child until the parent/carer arrives Hygiene and Infection Control We have a stocked first aid box, containing items to deal with minor cuts and injuries. It also contains gloves to protect the staff. Please see our sick child policy for guidance on infectious illness. Monitoring The Manager will monitor staff to ensure the procedures are being carried out, and that they are clear to all. Staff will be asked to feedback at meetings any areas of concern or to identify training needs that they may require. Review The policy will be reviewed annually and amendments and changes will be carried if necessary, any amendments will be pointed out to staff and parents. |
